Around 7:10 p.m. Thursday, Dayton police responded to the 500 block of East Fourth Street for a reported shooting.
When they arrived, they found a man, later identified as Harris, with a gunshot wound, said Dayton police Lt. Eric Sheldon.
Harris was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died from injuries.
The crime scene was on Fourth Street, between Wayne Avenue and Walnut Street. The area is a short walk from the Oregon District business district on East Fifth Street.
Police on Thursday evening blocked off a section of Fourth Street that is home to the Wheelhouse Lofts on the southside and the 503 apartments on the northside. Officers interviewed some residents of the 503 on Thursday evening.
That part of the city, east of Wayne Avenue and south of the train tracks, is being redeveloped and rebranded as “Oregon East.”
Weyland Ventures, the developer of the Wheelhouse and the 503 apartments, said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred outside one of our Dayton properties. Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones and all those affected.”
The Kentucky-based firm said it is fully cooperating with police as homicide detectives investigate the shooting.
“We remain committed to the safety and well-being of our residents and have requested increased patrols from local law enforcement in the area,” Weyland Ventures said.
